XPO BOL API: Full Lifecycle Support

XPO officially documents a comprehensive BOL REST API, one of its most capable API groups. When configured in FTM, this enables the entire BOL workflow without leaving Salesforce.

Create BOL
Create a BOL linked to an existing pickup request, or create standalone without a prior pickup
Update and Cancel
Modify BOL details or cancel through the API; list one or many BOLs by criteria
Retrieve PDFs and Labels
Retrieve the BOL as a PDF, shipping label, and PAPS label (for Canada-bound shipments); email BOL PDF directly through the API
Available for Integration BOL API
Shipment Tracking API

XPO Tracking, Status and Full Event History

FTM connects to XPO’s Tracking API to retrieve current status and movement history for one or multiple PRO numbers. Shipment events attach to the Salesforce record where your team already works.

  • ✦ Single PRO tracking: retrieve current status from pickup through delivery
  • ✦ Multiple PRO batch tracking: retrieve status for a list of shipments in one request
  • ✦ Full event history: movement-specific events or complete shipment timeline
  • ✦ Tracking results stored on the Salesforce shipment record via configured FTM workflow

XPO Handles the Freight. FTM Handles the Data.

A clear division of responsibility, XPO’s network and APIs handle carrier execution; FTM handles your Salesforce data model, workflow logic, and multi-carrier management.

XPO Handles
API endpoints, authentication, and network infrastructure
Rate engine, contracted pricing, and accessorial calculations
Pickup dispatch, driver routing, and freight movement
BOL generation, PRO number assignment, and PDF creation
Shipment event data and shipment image storage
Service center network and transit time calculations
FTM Handles
OAuth 2.0 token management and API credential security
Lane Quote record, carrier selection, and rate comparison UI
Pickup request submission and confirmation storage in Salesforce
BOL data entry, label retrieval, and document association to records
Tracking data storage, record updates, and team visibility
Freight reporting, billing, and multi-carrier analytics in Salesforce

What Changes When XPO Connects to FTM

⬅ Without FTM Integration
Rate requests require logging into XPO’s portal or calling for a quote, then manually entering the rate elsewhere
BOL creation is done in XPO’s web interface; PDFs downloaded and re-uploaded to Salesforce attachments
Tracking requires navigating to XPO’s site per shipment; updates are manually logged
Delivery receipts and documents are retrieved manually and stored outside Salesforce, breaking audit trails
Freight data lives in carrier portals and spreadsheets, not in Salesforce where your team reports from
✦ With FTM + XPO Integration
✓ XPO rates are requested from the Lane Quote alongside other contracted carriers, one comparison, one workflow
✓ BOL creation, PDF retrieval, and label generation run through XPO’s API and link directly to Salesforce records
✓ Shipment tracking is retrieved via XPO’s API on a configured schedule and stored on the Salesforce shipment record
✓ Delivery receipts and shipment images are retrieved via XPO’s Imaging API and surfaced inside FTM
✓ XPO freight data captured through the integration, rates, BOLs, tracking, documents, lives in Salesforce where your team already operates
Business Outcomes

Three Operational Shifts That Come with the Integration

One Freight Record Per Shipment
Rate, pickup confirmation, BOL, tracking status, and delivery receipt all attach to the same Salesforce record. Your team stops assembling shipment data from multiple sources.
XPO Managed Entirely in Salesforce
When configured, the full XPO workflow, from rate request through document retrieval, runs without leaving Salesforce.
Freight Data You Can Report On
XPO freight data captured in Salesforce becomes reportable alongside your other carrier data, lane cost comparisons, transit performance, and shipment volume in Salesforce dashboards.

Frequently Asked Questions

FTM is designed to integrate with all six of XPO’s documented REST API groups: Rating, Shipment Tracking, Pickup Request, Bill of Lading, Imaging, and LTL Shipping Tools. XPO’s APIs use OAuth 2.0 authentication and support both JSON and XML formats. Contact FTM to discuss which API groups are active for your configuration.
Yes, XPO officially documents a comprehensive BOL API that supports creating BOLs with or without a prior pickup request, updating and cancelling BOLs, and retrieving BOL PDFs, shipping labels, and PAPS labels. When this API group is configured in FTM, the full BOL workflow runs inside Salesforce.
XPO’s Imaging API retrieves images by PRO number. Documented image types include: Bill of Lading, Delivery Receipt, Delivery Return Receipt, Customs Documents, Inspection Report, Letter of Authority, and NMFC Certification. Document availability depends on shipment status and XPO’s imaging system at the time of the request.
XPO’s Rating API documents three special services: GUR (Guaranteed), G12 (Guaranteed by Noon), and RRS. When FTM requests a rate quote, it can include these service types and return the corresponding guaranteed rates alongside standard options for comparison.
XPO’s Tracking API supports both single-PRO and multi-PRO requests in a single API call. FTM can be configured to retrieve tracking status and event history for multiple shipments and store the results against the corresponding Salesforce records on a configured schedule.
You need an active XPO LTL account, API credentials obtained through XPO’s registration process (contact [email protected] for onboarding), and FTM configured with those credentials. The XPO APIs use OAuth 2.0 with bearer token authentication. FTM handles token lifecycle management within the integration. Book a demo to discuss your specific requirements.
